Coaching
Coaches play a vital role in the sport of netball through their interaction with their players, parents and supporters. Coaches have the potential to influence, not only the development of sport-specific skills and sporting performance, but also the participants’ development as a person and their approach to other aspects of their life.
While at times it can be challenging, coaching can also be an immensely satisfying role. Coaches of junior teams are first and foremost teachers and role models to young girls, and at SNC we want our coaches to have an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
SNC coaches are expected to:
- Obtain a Working with Children check
- Complete the online Foundation Coach Accreditation course
- Hold and facilitate training for the team members once a week
- Create a safe environment for players which leads and builds on skill development, teamwork and the enjoyment of the game.
- Treat all players equally and with respect.
- Be a role model for the principles of fair play and ensure players display the same qualities.
- Ensure players experience equal court time over the season.
- Communicate effectively with your Team Manager, remember they are there to support you.
- Be approachable, encouraging, respectful and inclusive.
- Players play for fun and enjoyment and to be the best player they can be, so always encourage effort with positive feedback.
Equal Court Time Policy
- All players should have an equal opportunity to play and contribute to the teams success
- A fair and transparent rotation system should be established that ensures all players get the same amount of game time throughout the season.
- Coaches should communicate clearly with players about their role in the game and when they can expect to be substituted.
- Players who have played less time in previous games should be given priority for substitutions to ensure they get a fair amount of time on court.
- The team’s rotation policy should be reviewed regularly to ensure that it is effective and fair, and to make adjustments as needed.
- During semi finals to grand finals, court time and positional rotations are solely at the coach’s discretion and coaches are encouraged to select the strongest roster. It is important to remember that all players have worked hard during the season and should all be given the opportunity to take the court for a minimum of a quarter during a finals game. All players should support each other whoever is on the court and play to the best of their ability whenever they are on the court.
Net Set Go
- Each player should be given equal opportunities to play and learn the game of netball.
- All playing positions to be rotated during the game so that no player plays more than half the game in the same position. Players must rotate through all positions during the season.
- A fair and transparent rotation system should be established that ensures all players get a similar amount of game time.
- Coaches should communicate clearly with players and parents about the rotation system and the goals of the program.
- The emphasis should be on fun and learning rather than winning or competition.
- Coaches should provide positive feedback and encouragement to all players to promote a positive and supportive environment
